The Justice League (in alliance to Nolan?)

Here's something to chew on for awhile: Nolan reignited DC's comic book to film franchise with Christian Bale and The Dark Knight trilogy. He has been very adamant on ending his Batman saga with The Dark Knight Rises. He is not going to move along with the story he built because in his mind it is finished. I admire and applaud him for sticking to his guns with this. And we already know how I feel about his trilogy.

So now we need to look at the upcoming Superman movie, Man of Steel directed by Zack Snyder and “Godfathered” by none other than Nolan. By the looks of the teaser for the Superman flick we can see that it certainly looks Nolanized with a dark, gritty, realistic human elements. But really, how realistic and human can you get with a superhero like Superman? (That's a whole other article in itself.) I understand that Nolan's Batmans were a very bankable set of movies for Warner Bros., but haven't they learned that trying to repeat yourself too much only leads to pissed off fans and shitty movies?

My bigger concern with all this is the fact that they're building a Marvel-inspired world leading to a Justice League movie. This means there will be another Batman movie. We all knew it was going to happen, so just cool it for a set. A year ago Warner said they wanted the Justice League out by 2013, showing they want this thing done sooner than later. I don't think we're going to be able to let the celluloid cool on Bale's Dark Knight before they've put out a new version. Okay, now you can get pissed. I'm fine with them rebooting the franchise—mainly because I came to terms with it many years ago—but the fact they've Nolanized the new Superman already knowing it was going to be part of a bigger picture frightens me. It scares me because they're giving us an idea of what they intend to do with the Justice League as a whole. And that is to Nolanize each entry in the canon.

Basically, it's this: If they Nolanize the Justice League movie, and all the movies leading up to it—but pretend like Bale's Batman never existed—will it cheapen both the Justice League and The Dark Knight trilogy? If the new movie sucks it's only going to bring down the tone and direction that was pioneered by Nolan, thus ruining The Dark Knight trilogy. But if the movie's good, we'll see a deluding in the tonal qualities that sets Nolan's Batman apart from the rest of the superhero genre.

What do you think?

  1. Well this is just a downer. I personally would have rather had this news shared/discovered during a preview at the movies or something where I am at least able to throw my popcorn at the screen Nd get rowdy in protest. Now I'm just sitting the toilet having a legitimately "crappy" moment. Thanks Joe.
